PowerMat Charging Mat: Review

If you’re like me then the more gadgets you carry with you the more chargers and cables go with them. Even worse is when you don’t have the right charger, or there just isn’t a plug.

To get around this the PowerMat provides a rechargeable base on which you place your gadgets such as phones, mp3 players and handheld games consoles and they get charged, wirelessly, wherever you are.

This magic happens because you fit your gadgets with cases/batteries that contain the wizardry to allow them to charge wirelessly via the harmless EM field the base creates.

You charge the base from the mains and the built in li-ion battery should give a couple of charges at least of your gadgets – but it will depend what you are charging.

I tried the adapter for the Nintendo DS Lite and found it fitted snugly without adding weight or bulk. In use you just sit the DS on top of the base and magnets attach it and keep it in the right place. Once there it just charges like normal – and a light on the base tells you how much juice is left.

Phones work in a similar way, but if yours isn’t supported by a case there is a small puck that gives a normal USB connection so you just use your normal lead with that – also enabling a much wider range of devices to be charged.

Overall I’d say the PowerMat is vital for anyone who spends A good amount of time on the road – for families it could prove useful on long journeys to keep the kids gadgets running, and even your phones etc if your camping or at a festival.

If I had to change anything I’d give it a bigger battery for even greater independence from the mains, and maybe the ability to charge high current devices like Tablet PCs.
